U14 COUNTY FINAL:
Parteen GAA & Camogie Club sure are on a roll in 2021. Following three county title wins, three weeks in a row, last Saturday 13th November the U14 hurlers beat The Banner and were crowned County Champions. It was 1978 since this title was awarded to Parteen.
The opening score of the game came in the first minute, it was a point from Parteens wing forward Andrew Clery. Mikey Cahill, full-forward, struck Parteens first goal in the fourth minute as they sneaked forward to lead the final. It was followed by a second goal from Gavin Marsall giving Parteen a comfortable start to the final within five minutes of play. The Banner scored their second point in the sixteenth minute followed by a goal. A further three points from Seán Maxwell, Gavin Marshall and Ruaidhrí Nolan had Parteen in a comfortable lead at the first water break leading 2-04 to The Banners 1-02.
The second quarter saw Parteens Joe Maxwell score two goals in quick succession of each other, these goals were followed by a point from Joe’s brother Seán. The Banner got their fourth score of the game bringing the half-time score to Parteen 4-05 The Banner 1-03.
The Banner were the first to enter the score sheet in the second half of the final with a point. Points from Parteens Andrew Clery and Joe Maxwell kept the score board busy. A goal from Seán Maxwell and a point from Joe Maxwell kept the fast-paced game on Parteens side. Mikey Cahill scored his second goal of the day to give the large Parteen supporters even more to cheer about. Parteen scorers Andrew Clery & Ronan Curtin scored a point a piece before captain Ruaidhrí Nolan scored the seventh goal of the match. The last score from Parteen came from Mikey Cahill with a puck over the bar.
There was no Parteen score in the last quarter, they had already left everything on the pitch. The last score of the game was a point from The Banner.
Parteens goalie Cormac Barry made a diving save in the dying minutes to prevent The Banner from scoring a much-needed goal. This was only one of the skilful saves by Cormac throughout this season.
The low score line by The Banner is a testament to the work put in by Parteens back line Jack Meaney, Eoin Barrett, Denis O’Driscoll, Mark McDermott, Dylan O’Connell and Jack Thorne. They all put in strong performances on the day.
The skills shown by Parteens playmakers on the frontline reflect Parteens high score line. Without the skills shown by Finn Cahill, Joe Browne, Conor Howard and Shane Curtin, who assisted the days scorers, Parteen would not have had the opportunities given to the scorers.
We had some great introductions off the bench - Jack O’Rielly, Donal Connelly, Evan Foley and Shane O’Brien all played their part in winning this final.
After the game the trophy was presented to captain Ruaidhrí Nolan by Bord na nÓg Iomaint chairperson Neil O’Brien.
There is not a team more deserving of this honour than the U14 boys. They have had a tough run of things in the last while but their hard work in this competition has certainly paid off for them.
The strength and determination of these boys was supported by their team of experienced coaches. These coaches have put in a lot of time and effort into training these boys since they were a young age. A big thank you to Keith Howard, Roddy McDermott, Ger McKenna, Billy Browne, Ian Coll, Ken Barrett and Brendan Ryan.
